Sports Nutrition for Young Athletes
Give them the fuel to compete — and the habits to last a lifetime.
Book a Free Connect CallGood nutrition in the middle and high school years does not just improve performance right now. It builds the foundation that carries athletes through college, adult sport, and lifelong health.
Young athletes are not small adults. They are in the middle of one of the most physically demanding periods of their lives — growing, developing, and training simultaneously. The nutritional demands that come with that are real, specific, and almost never adequately addressed by generic sports nutrition advice written for professionals or collegiate athletes.
Sports nutrition counseling for middle and high schoolers at Fuel NC is built around what is actually going on in a young athlete's body — the growth demands, the training demands, and the increasingly complicated relationship with food and body image that the teenage years often bring. We work with the athlete and, where helpful, with the family.

Whether your athlete is competing at the varsity level or just getting serious about their sport, the nutritional foundation matters. These are the young athletes who benefit most from working with a sports dietitian.
- Middle and high school athletes in any sport — soccer, basketball, swimming, track, cross country, lacrosse, football, volleyball, and more.
- Young athletes who have been found to have low iron or vitamin D, or who may need these and other labs drawn to check.
- Young athletes who are constantly tired, struggling to recover between practices, or hitting a performance plateau despite putting in the work.
- Athletes who are underweight, underperforming, or showing signs of underfueling — fatigue, frequent illness, poor concentration, or stalled growth.
- Athletes who are anxious or confused about food — avoiding carbs, skipping meals before practice, or struggling with the relationship between food and body image.
- Families who want guidance on how to support their athlete at home — what to stock in the fridge, how to handle nutrition on game days, and how to have helpful conversations about food without making it complicated.
- Young athletes preparing for a specific event, season, or competitive level who want to show up ready.
The areas sports nutrition counseling covers for young athletes.
The specific focus depends on the athlete's sport, training schedule, and what is getting in the way. These are the areas that come up most often.
Fueling for growth and training simultaneously
Young athletes are not just fueling workouts — they are also fueling active growth and development. The energy and protein demands that come with both at the same time are higher than most families realize, and underfueling in this window has consequences that go well beyond athletic performance.
Pre and post-workout nutrition for school schedules
Eating around a school day is genuinely complicated. Early morning practices, lunch at 11 a.m., games at 5 p.m. with homework after — we build fueling strategies around the actual schedule, not an idealized one.
Carbohydrate and energy needs for sport
Most young athletes have absorbed some version of the low-carb message from social media, coaches, or peers. Carbohydrates are the primary fuel for youth sport. Getting this right changes performance, mood, and recovery.
Protein for growth and muscle development
Young athletes need more protein than their non-athlete peers, distributed across the day in ways that support both training adaptation and healthy development. We make this practical and achievable within a real family's food environment.
Hydration for practice and competition
Dehydration affects focus, speed, and decision-making before most athletes recognize it as a problem. Sport-specific hydration strategies for practices, games, and tournaments.
Game day and tournament nutrition
What to eat the night before, the morning of, between games in a tournament, and how to recover afterward. Practical, specific, and tested in real competition.
Body image and food relationships
The teenage years are when disordered eating patterns most commonly develop, and athletic environments can accelerate that. We approach food and body conversations with young athletes carefully, using language that builds confidence and capability rather than anxiety or shame.
A note on how we work with families.
Sports nutrition for young athletes works best when the family is part of the conversation. We do not expect parents to be nutrition experts — that is what we are here for. But we do find that outcomes are significantly better when the home environment supports what the athlete is working on in sessions.
Depending on the athlete's age and preferences, sessions may include parents directly or keep them updated separately. We follow the athlete's lead on that. The goal is always to build the athlete's own understanding and confidence with food — not to create dependency on external rules or supervision.
If you are a parent who is worried about your athlete's eating, their weight, their energy, or their relationship with food, a free connect call is the right place to start that conversation — even if you are not sure yet whether there is a clinical issue or just a fueling gap.
We recommend that athletes age 13 or younger be accompanied by a parent or guardian during the visit, while athletes 14 years or older can attend the nutrition visit by themselves. However, a parent or guardian will need to be at the visit briefly in order to schedule a follow-up appointment with the provider.

What working together actually looks like.
Sessions are built around the athlete's sport, schedule, and real life. Nothing generic gets handed over at the first appointment.
Free connect call
A free 20-minute conversation — with the athlete, a parent, or both — where we talk through what is going on and explain how we work. No commitment required.
Full intake at the first session
Training schedule, sport demands, current eating patterns, growth and health history, goals, and what has and has not worked before. This is where the individualized plan begins.
A plan built around their actual life
School schedule, practice times, family food environment, the athlete's own food preferences. Not a template. Something that actually works for this specific kid.
Ongoing sessions through the season
Fueling needs shift with training load, competition schedule, and growth. Regular sessions keep the plan current and give the athlete a place to bring questions as they come up.
Straightforward pricing. No surprise fees. Insurance accepted.
Most of our clients use insurance. If you have BCBS, Aetna, the State Health Plan, Meritain, or Cigna, there is a good chance sessions are covered — sometimes at no out-of-pocket cost. Check coverage before deciding anything about pricing.
